Four areas where legal & regulatory change creates leverage
01 Power sector laws, frameworks & electricity
Many African countries are developing or updating laws and opening up
electricity markets — presenting both opportunities and risks for equitable
renewable energy systems.
02 Generation planning & procurement
Large-scale generation planning and procurement is taking place to meet growing
electricity needs. It is critical that new capacity is largely renewable and designed for
a flexible, efficient system.
03 Transmission development
A key enabler of renewable energy uptake, with legal reforms to transmission
planning and procurement underway — and social, environmental and cost
risks if not done well.
04 Regional integration
Growing interest in cross-border electricity trading needs aligned regulatory
frameworks. Expanding balancing areas within power pools is a major opportunity for
renewable energy.
