Where we work
LETA works in countries where reforms are planned or underway, and where there is scope for strategic intervention. Together with partner organisations, we work in three focus countries — Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa — and support partners in a number of other countries, including Zimbabwe.
Kenya
High renewable potential, with governance challenges in procurement, financing and transmission.
South Africa
A large fossil-fuel economy undergoing market reform, unbundling and procurement change.
Nigeria
The 2023 constitutional amendment ended the federal electricity monopoly, opening reform.
Kenya
Kenya has high renewable energy potential, particularly in geothermal, wind and solar, but continues to face governance challenges in electricity procurement, financing, and transmission infrastructure. LETA is supporting efforts to strengthen governance, improve planning and procurement, and advance frameworks that enable high renewable energy deployment.
South Africa
South Africa is a large fossil fuel economy with a financially distressed national utility and historic supply shortages. The country is undergoing major legal and regulatory change, including sector unbundling and market reform. LETA engages through targeted submissions on market rules, transmission planning and procurement regulations.
Nigeria
Nigeria is seeking to diversify its energy mix and expand electricity access amid weak infrastructure and grid constraints. The 2023 constitutional amendment ending the federal monopoly on electricity has created important opportunities for reform at federal and state levels. LETA is well placed to support an enabling framework for renewable energy development.
Beyond our focus countries
LETA also provides technical legal support to partners in a number of other countries, including Zimbabwe, and undertakes gap analyses and research across the continent — from Uganda, Ethiopia and Tanzania to regional power pools.
